I do the same thing. He put in the time and work to get that bonus and should be paid for it. Will the manager be upset? Possibly if he a shitty manager. A good manager will want to see their subordinates do well in their career and knows that few stick with a company for decades any longer. Besides, what are the chances that this guy will go back to that company considering he doesn really enjoy that job? If a manager gets upset by this, it should be at the company he works for because they are not paying market rate for that role or they don have a better growth process for internal employees to make those big jumps in duties/pay. Because of the structure where they offer a retention bonus instead of paying a fair market rate it will cause people to do the same in the future. Now, will it mean that they eventually decide to get rid of that bonus in the future or add on an addendum that requires that the people stay for a certain period of time or they pay it back? Maybe. Being ripped away from friends when school is almost done would be a huge stress on him to make new friends/social circle in an area where he may not have anyone that he knows outside of family.you do this, you need to clearly set ground rules and expect him to pay a fair “rent and board” to help offset any costs from an extra mouth to feed. Maybe he needs a part time job to finish up the year so that he can give you something for staying with you. If you have room, your son vouches for him and your son is a good kid it would sway my thoughts a lot. My parents did the same for a friend of my brother when he was a Sr in High School, but that kid had many issues which would have come to light had my parents had taken the time to speak to his family/school about him. If they had done that research before they probably wouldn have let him live with us, but while he stayed with us he was well behaved and kept his issues out of the house and knew the rules.honestly, many companies that use contractors will usually treat the contractors worse than the full time permanent employees. Why they treat contractors different is probably because they been accustomed to contractors to not pan out and in turn they sour on new guys quickly.
